FAQs - YFD Participants

How do I get my school involved with YFD?

  • Want YFD coaches at your school? Contact our Outreach Team at columbia.yfd@gmail.com. We place coaches in classrooms every fall and spring semester.

Is it okay if my students do not have any debate experience?

  • Absolutely - we have specialized plans for different skill levels, so beginner-level students are not at a disadvantage.

  • Conversely, if your students have experience, we also have plans for them - and we will try to match you with our more experienced coaches.

How will YFD work virtually? My students will be in school in person, but YFD is teaching online. How does this work?

  • We are happy to develop custom plans for classrooms, so please reach out to columbia.yfd@gmail.com to discuss the best approach for your classroom.

Why is it beneficial to learn debate and public speaking?

  • Our mission is to improve education in public schools through debate and public speaking instruction, empowering students to think critically and advocate for themselves.

  • Debate teaches students confidence, critical thinking, and communication skills. Plus, succeeding at our semester-end tournament can be a great self-esteem booster for your students and a validation of their efforts!

What do I do if I have a problem with the YFD coach paired with my classroom?

  • If you feel there are problems with your coach’s punctuality, preparation and professionalism, please reach out through the form below. Some examples below:

    • You are having trouble communicating with your coach.

    • Your coach is covering material too advanced or basic for your students’ skill level.

    • You feel your classroom could be more interactive.
