FAQs - YFD End-of-Semester Tournament

When and where will the tournament be held?

  • The Fall 2022 end-of-semester tournament will be held on December 10th at Columbia’s campus.

How do I register for the YFD Tournament?

Who else will participate in the tournament?

  • Other YFD schools. Students will face students taught by similarly trained coaches.

  • If there are enough entries, we will split the tournament into two categories based upon prior experience.

Are there separate competitions for beginner debaters and advanced debaters?

  • See answer directly above: it’s size dependent.

  • By the end of the semester, nearly all students will have been taught the same facets of debate, so the difference is small

  • Most of our students start with no experience, and many have done quite well at previous YFD competitions!

What awards can I win at the YFD tournament? Are there prizes?

  • In the past, high-performing students have received trophies, plaques, certificates, and other related awards.

I want to compete at the YFD Tournament but do not have a committed partner willing to compete with me. What can I do?

  • Try to find a partner as soon as possible, and reach out to your coach and teacher for help! It’s easiest for us to match unpaired students when we know you need partners at the start.

I would like to attend the YFD tournament in person, but I do not have a way to get there. What should I do?

  • Speak to your coach, who will contact the YFD leadership team - we will do our absolute best to work something out.

How does the virtual tournament compare to the in-person tournament?

  • Explanation of turnout at the virtual tournaments

  • Anticipated number of participants (based on previous turnout and current number of classrooms/students we’re servicing)
